First Generation College Students Face Many Struggles: Here Is How To Help
Maxwell Walpole

For incoming college students who are the first ones in their immediate family to pursue a college degree, the naturally stressful transition to a new environment with unprecedented academic and social demands may be intensified by additional pressure. These students may feel as if it is their responsibility to be academically successful, not only for themselves, but for their families as well. But although the road ahead may seem overwhelming, there is an abundance of available resources to help first-generation college students with their college and career paths.

Most colleges offer a variety of resources and employ many professionals who are ready and willing to help students with academic pursuits and deciding on a future career. Many colleges employ academic and career advisors, tutors, financial assistance staff, and even counselors who help students effectively manage mental health problems. Arranging meetings with professors during their office hours can help build a positive relationship with them and open up opportunities many students would otherwise not be aware of.

Outside of the advice of career professionals, friends, peer relationships and family can also be of invaluable assistance to first generation college students. Expanding your social circle on-campus by joining clubs and other student organizations can create opportunities for networking, increase a student’s sense of belonging in their college’s community, and provide mental health benefits. Talking with your family whenever possible can also be helpful, as they can provide moral support, practical advice, and learn from you as you learn from college.

By being humble enough to know when to reach out to others for help and by being aware of the available resources and taking advantage of them, a first generation college student can build a strong support network that will nurture, sustain and guide them on their path towards academic success and a fulfilling career.
